Tour Event 3 – Reports

Nine in a row for Thompson!

Sue Thompson stepped up to take her ninth consecutive win at tour 3. After a disappointing World Championships, Thompson had a point to prove at Players Lounge and her intent was clear from the off with a 5-0 win over Amanda Booth and 5-1 win against 16 seed Amy Beauchamp on the first day of play. Missing balls was set to be a rarity over the course of the weekend! A 6-1 quarter final victory over Sue Fletcher saw a semi line up against Sharon Dickson, who had stopped Thompson in her quest for an 11th World Championship title earlier this month. Sue knew this would be another tough match but pounced on every chance given to her by the Welsh International, and made her way to the final with an impressive 6-1 scoreline.
For the third tour running No.2 seed Collette Henriksen awaited Sue in the final. Northern Ireland based Henriksen had good form over the weekend with wins over Tina Allton (5-1) and Sarah Ramsden (5-2) in the early rounds, before final round victories over Sharon Lunn (6-2) and Carly Smith (6-4). Eager to make a mark in this final, Collette got off to a good start and led the match 3-2 with some great play over a seemingly rattled Thompson. However she struggled with dry breaks and it was Sue who kept control to sneak ahead 6-5. A well thought out clearance in what was to be the final frame, Sue was visibly relieved to pot her final yellow and land perfectly on the black, punching the air as the match winning ball dropped into the pocket to win 7-5!

Amy Coley takes the plate prize

No.12 seed Amy Coley added another plate win, her second of this year, to her ever growing list of pool achievements. Losing in the main competition to England International Emma Wilkinson 5-1, Amy didn’t look back and showed her consistency in this event with wins over Anne Taylor (4-2), Anne Louise Arkle (4-1), Jackie Baker (5-1) and Michelle Rooney (5-3) before defeating Lisa McGirr 5-2 in the final.
